1 The Transformative Experience of Cultivating Empathy in Teaching Intercultural Studies as Substantiated in The Sociolinguistics and Gender Studies Master One Community , Fatima Zohra BENNEGHROUZI
ABSTRACT: Different value systems, coupled with diverging communication styles and behaviours can build up into stern instances of miscommunication and conflict among cultural groups, both within and across societies. In this spirit, my paper probes the following question: How can learners of intercultural studies attain the flair to understand the dynamics of intercultural contact and the practical skills to successfully engage with cultural diversity? This is tested against the postulation which states that learners of intercultural studies can scarcely generate a trans-cultural competence in an eight-week lecture series.  With this in mind and through the intercultural studies lecture series, my main objective is to call attention to the significance of cultivating empathy which becomes pivotal in the intercultural perception enacted by and cultivated in the Master 1 (Sociolinguistics and Gender Studies) inter-culturality classroom. The research tool employed in the present study is: An eight week structured observation describing the intercultural studies lecture series in action. This includes the distribution of 4 assignments to students which aims at gauging the development of their intercultural sensitiveness all along the eight week lecture series in the light of their classroom interactions. Issues relating to colonialism, religion, gender, racism, prejudice, interdependence and many more are also closely summoned up in the wake of such interactions. The strategy implemented throughout the course elaborates chiefly on Sitaram and Cogdell’s Value Classification Chart (1976) which contrasts mainstream values at work in different cultural environments, and the Worldwork’s Framework of International Competencies (2010) which propounds manoeuvres for trans-cultural sensitivity.

ABSTRACT: This paper tries to study the question of the attitudes and the motivation of the students of the university center of Tindouf with regard to the French language. This study is important insofar as the understanding of the relationship between students and the French language could be used to better develop teaching practices within the French language classes in the region of the great south of Algeria.
ABSTRACT: The speech spoken in Oran shows a remarkable number of Spanish borrowings due to its strong contact with Spanish population along the centuries. This contact initially took place in 903, when the first Andalusians reached the Oran coast. After that, this Algerian city received in 1492 the Hispano- Muslim refugees and Sephardic Jews who were exiled from Al-Andalus, and a second expulsions wave in 1609. But, maybe, the Spanish occupation between 1509 and 1791 along with the development of a lingua franca used by sailors in the Mediterranean basin between XV-XVIII centuries were the most influential events on the Oran vernacular language. The contact remained with the new refugees and exiles arrival due to Spanish Civil war (1936-1939). Nowadays, the link between both Spanish and Algerian people is even strong and these borrowings, which include different fields, are fully integrated into the familiar and formal levels of the speech of both the young and old generations. This paper aims to make an analysis of the phonetic, morphological and semantic changes of many borrowings of Spanish origin presents today in the Oran speech as well as their classification and usages.

ABSTRACT: The teaching of French as foreign language (FFL) and its derivatives allows the phonetic linguist to develop an interesting approach based on the constitution of types of phonetic difficulties. From small group basic pronunciation exercises, we propose a protocol to develop real "personalized programs" so that the learner can finally tackle his difficulties in a safe and rewarding way. This protocol begins with a diagnosis and ends with the realization of personalized exercises of articulatory gymnastics.
7 Interkulturalität im algerischen DaF- Unterricht: Bedeutung, Hindernisse und Herausforderungen , Mohamed NOUAH
ABSTRACT: Since the beginning of the 20th Century till now, teaching foreign languages gives a great importance to learn foreign languages and cultures. At the same time, the objective of teaching is not to improve only the oral competencies, but to focus on understanding and perceiving foreign culture by "Interculturality" Interculturality is a method of teaching- learning process, which is a mean that links between knowledge an information with foreign cultures and languages to achieve that demands learning conditions that play a great role to develop "Interculturality" of the Lerner. The objective of this communication is not based on showing the big importance of interculturality but also on showing its successful to apply success during a Germany Course (Lesson) in Algeria and the struggles that face it order to suggest new techniques to improve the learning- teaching process quality.
8 To What Extent Does Incorrect Pronunciation Alter Meaning , Zoubida SEBANE
ABSTRACT: This article targets a feature of the language which is essential in foreign language acquisition. All the skills are important to acquire when we are learning a foreign or a second language. However, only the oral skill can immediately assess your mastery of the language and more specifically the pronouncing ability. Good and accurate pronunciation facilitates communication and allows interaction and feedback. It avoids ambiguities and misunderstanding with the listener.   As his pronunciation is correct, the speaker is given interest and consideration, he feels comfortable and can challenge all issues. The situation is completely different when the speaker ‘s oral production is approximate or somehow weak. It delays comprehension and the conversation is not pleasant. There is much effort from parts, the speaker and the hearer. Good speaking abilities open many opportunities social and professional opportunities to the speaker. Pronunciation appears in every language skill acquisition. Listening and speaking, which is obvious, also in reading as the reader should know the pronunciation of the word and finally in writing because the learner is already familiar with the spelling form of the words.
9 Integrating Culture in EFL: High Stakes and Thorny Issues , Habib YAHIAOUI
ABSTRACT: The starting point of the present paper is the strong conviction that the cultural dimension should be encompassed in EFL education. Indeed, cultural competence is a key factor in enhancing the learning of English and the comprehension of the bolts and nuts of the target culture so as to provide an environment of respect and reciprocity of ideas. At the same time, cultural dimension is a salient issue in our education as one should know whether the practitioners have the skill, the knowledge, and  the attitude to incorporate this dimension. To answer this question, a research has been carried out at six secondary school at sig (Mascara) involving 23 teachers. A questionnaire, an interview and sessions of observation have been used to collect data. Results show that teachers do not follow a systematic process in introducing the cultural insight in their lesson planning. Nor do they devote a consistent amount of time to teach the cultural dimension.

11 Why Do Algerians Code Switch on Facebook? Attitudes and Motives , Mimouna ZITOUNI Younes SAAID
ABSTRACT: As Facebook has expeditiously developed into one of the best-liked modes of communication on the Internet, language has also been inveigled in terms of its use, usage and practices. Code-switching (CS), the alternate use of more than one language in a discourse, is one of the language phenomena which have demonstrated actual infiltration, connotation and implication on language production and exchange among Algerian Facebook users. This research investigates attitudes that lie behind the manifestation of such language switching. The present work aims to raise its problematic in the multilingual Arabic-French-English Facebook discourse of young Algerian University students of English living in Oran. Our corpus consists of 75 participants. Data was gathered from a questionnaire which was administered to explore attitudes towards Arabic, French and English language use in concordance with code switching phenominality in online written discourse. Collected data was quantified, analysed and discussed. Results showed that a great majority of the respondents code-switch in Facebook. Furthermore, it is found that students are highly positive in their attitudes toward the use of code-switching in Facebook communication. It is suggested that many of the Algerian Facebook users employ CS as a tool not only to enhance socializing but also academic activities.
ABSTRACT: The present paper aims at comparing and analyzing some textual deformations, commonly referred to as Deforming Tendencies, resulting from the ethnocentric practice of translation that characterizes literary translation in general and prose translation in particular. We will be using the grid of analysis as proposed by the French translator and translation critic Antoine Berman. Our analytical analysis will particularly put the emphasis on one of the most important deforming tendencies in literary translation, specifically “Rationalization”.  Based on the comparison and analysis of some samples extracted from the French version of Najib Mahfuz’s Zoqaq Al Midaq, our study will shed light on the functioning and consequences of the practice of such deforming tendency.
