Hydraulic Design of Water Conveyance Structure at Choba Junction, East-West Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers States, Nigeria

The importance of water conveyance structure in the maintenance of public infrastructure cannot be overemphasized. These collect and convey water from various sources to natural water bodies to avoid the destruction of urban infrastructure as well as street flooding. This study aims to propose and design a long term solution to the problem of road infrastructure damage at Choba junction of East-West road in Port Harcourt. The area contributing runoff to the drainage channel was estimated from google earth map and a most economic trapezoidal channel was designed using the manning’s formula for determination of appropriate flow velocity and channel dimensions. The estimated area contributing to runoff to the channel is 45,414 m2. A total runoff discharge of 108 m3/hr was estimated and used for the design of the channel. The wetted perimeter of the designed channel is 1.52 m while the area of the channel is 0.33 m2. The hydraulic radius of the proposed channel is 0.25 m. The channel was designed to have a depth of 0.50 m, a freeboard of 0.30 m, and a bed width of 0.40 m. The appropriate implementations of these recommendations would forestall the constant damage of road pavements at Choba junction of East-West Road, Port Harcourt.
