ATTITUDES, PERCEPTIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF STUDENTS IN DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY TOWARDS PRACTICE OF CASUAL SEX

Abstract


Introduction: casual sex is sexual activity between people who are not established sexual partners or do not know each other well and as such, casual sex is becoming more common, developing into a societal norm for young adults. Methods: Data for this study were collected randomly from the Delta State University students in Abraka, Oleh, and Asaba campuses. The study involved 500 subjects, aged 16-27years. Only students from Delta State University, Abraka were allowed to participate in the study. Questionnaires were administered to the undergraduates in Delta State University Abraka, Nigeria. The questionnaires comprised of socio-demographic variables, such as the respondent’s age, religion, and marital status. Also, the questionnaire contains variables such as attitudes, perceptions, and implications on casual sex. The research method was chosen in order to facilitate the needed information for the study. Ethical approval was sort and obtained from the Ethical Committee of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Delta State University, Abraka, with Ref no: DELSU/CHR/ANA/45/7. Data obtained were analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 23). Results: The results showed that the majority of the students were within the age range 17-24years, (81.2%) and the majority were females, (61.6%). However, it was seen that majority agreed that they had boy/girlfriends, (54.2%), have heard of the word ‘casual sex, (80.2%), and therefore believed that casual sex meant random sex, (47.6%). Furthermore, the majority of the students strongly agreed that casual sex can lead to unwanted pregnancies (41.8%). Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that students of the Delta State University considered the engagement in casual sex as dangerous to health conditions and also to students’ academic performances and hence supported campus campaign against casual sex.
